Her passion for and dedication to people and place has led her to specialise in practices that are socially-engaged, community-led, and in embedded in place, whether that place be a team, a city park, a national museum or a rural town high street, doing this as a consultant, practitioner, researcher and writer. Her most recent project is ‘Trauma-Informed Placemaking’, with Dr Anita McKeown, a research platform and forthcoming textbook (Routledge, 2023). Cara is Editor and Convenor of The Routledge Handbook of Placemaking (Routledge, 2021); Co-Editor of Creative Placemaking and Beyond (Routledge, 2018); and author of Arts in Place: The Arts, the Urban and Social Practice (Routledge, 2017).

Of her appointment Cara says – “I am delighted to be joining the Phoenix Art Space team as Chair of its Board of Directors. Phoenix has long been at the heart of Brighton and Hove’s creative life, and I am honoured to join such a dynamic and innovative organisation and excited to work alongside the talented team to further enhance its impact and reach across the city and region. With a long-standing tradition of fostering creativity, providing a platform for local artists, and engaging the community through a variety of programmes and exhibitions, Phoenix is looking forward to a bright and inspiring future. I look forward to playing my part in ensuring that Phoenix Art Space remains a cornerstone of artistic expression.”

Lucy Day, Executive Director of Phoenix Art Space says-  “This a wonderful moment for Phoenix. To have someone as talented and experienced as Cara join us as Chair is a great privilege and I am very much looking forward to working with her through the next chapter of the Phoenix story”.
