WE ARE RECRUITING

WE ARE RECRUITING NEW TRUSTEES

As Phoenix Art Space evolves, we need Trustees who can help us think strategically, strengthen our resilience and champion the role artists and creative communities play in society. We’re seeking people with expertise, fresh perspectives and a commitment to helping shape our future.”Lucy Day, Executive Director

We are at an era-defining moment: a new ten-year plan, Securing the Next 30 Years, and a landmark retrofit of our six-storey home, Towards a Sustainable Future.

June 2026: We are looking for people who can strengthen our Board across seven areas, including legal, environmental, philanthropy, built environment, education, impact and evaluation, and local and national strategic insight.

We are equally interested in professional expertise and in lived experience. You do not need to have sat on a Board before.

Being a Trustee here is, in my own experience, unusually rewarding. You join a charity that is creatively alive, civically engaged, and ambitious about the role art plays in everyday life. You sit alongside colleagues who treat governance as a craft. And you arrive at a moment where the decisions we take together will shape the organisation for the next generation.” Dr. Cara Courage, Chair

FAQ

What would I be doing as a Trustee?

You will be contributing to the collective work of the Board, which includes:

  • Setting strategic direction and overseeing the activities of the charity.
  • Advocating for the vision, mission and values of Phoenix Art Space internally and externally.
  • Promoting and enabling equity, inclusion and diversity in everything we do.
  • Ensuring compliance with our governing documents, our regulators, and the law.
  • Maintaining proper fiscal oversight and overseeing risk to funding, reputation and delivery.
  • Working effectively with and respecting the expertise of the Phoenix Art Space staff team.

Do I need trustee experience?

You do not need previous Board experience to apply. What matters is the perspective, expertise and integrity you would bring, and your willingness to engage seriously with the role.

As part of our commitment to being a Disability Confident employer, all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for a Trustee role will be offered an interview under our guaranteed interview scheme.

What is the time commitment?

Trustees attend four Board meetings a year, held at Phoenix Art Space where possible, with the option to join remotely when you need to. Most Trustees also sit on one sub-committee (Finance, Development and Fundraising, or Building), which meets quarterly or as needed.

In total the commitment equates to roughly seven hours per month, including reading time. There will be busier periods around the capital project and the business plan, and quieter periods when the Board’s role is to monitor and support

Are Trustees paid?

No, Trustee roles are non-executive and unpaid. We reimburse reasonable expenses, including travel to meetings, access costs, and care of children or other dependents. We work with each Trustee on an access rider to support your participation.

Can I apply if my experience is outside the arts?

Yes, We have several places on the Board to fill, and these are the areas in which we are seeking to strengthen the Board at this time. Rather than recruiting to fixed roles, we are looking for people who can add to our collective capability across one or more of the areas below, whether through professional expertise or lived experience. We are particularly interested in candidates whose networks, perspective and influence reach beyond our building and into the wider sectors and systems that Phoenix Art Space is part of.
