The Cyanotype Studio
Six weeks of exploration and experimentation
Discover the creative possibilities of cyanotype in this six-week studio course exploring one of the oldest photographic printing processes. Designed for those with some previous experience, the course encourages experimentation, creative play and the development of your own approach in a supportive studio environment.
Across six three-hour sessions, you’ll print on a range of materials and surfaces. Starting with textiles such as tote bags, T-shirts and canvas, you’ll explore how different fabrics respond before creating digital negatives from your own photographs. You’ll then experiment with printing on slippery surfaces like glass and porous surfaces like wood, stone and porcelain, discovering how each material shapes the final image.
In the final session, you’ll explore duotone techniques beyond the traditional blue palette and develop a personal project that brings together the processes and materials that interest you most.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises and one-to-one support, you’ll build the confidence to work independently while creating a varied body of experimental prints.
Suitable for: Adults with a basic understanding of cyanotype who want to expand their skills through experimentation. Participants with previous experience will deepen their technical knowledge and develop a more personal body of work.
Costs: £170
Days: 6 Wednesday evenings
Times: 18:00 – 21:00
Dates: 7 October to 11 November

Nina Garstang studied her BA at University of Brighton & MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London where she received the Stanley Smith Scholarship. She is an interdisciplinary artist making in various mediums and materials. She makes and teaches one to one cyanotype workshops in her studio in Brighton. Where she paints, photographs the sea and collects ghost netting and plastics washed ashore after storms to make sculptural works. She exhibits nationally and internationally, highlights include ‘London Art’ fair in Chelsea, Scope in Miami and Paradise RCA in Milan. Nina’s solo show in the project space at Phoenix last year called Entangle explored the visceral and metaphorical experience of our relationship with the sea. She has paintings in public and private collections in London and Brighton, 6KB and Alex de Brye amongst others.
