We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Cass Art x Phoenix Studio Award 2025 is… Laurence Tidy!

The standard of applications this year was exceptionally high, however, Laurence stood out for his innovative use of contemporary art materials combined with discarded and reusable objects. His thoughtful engagement with art historical assemblage practices particularly impressed the judging panel, and we are really looking forward to welcoming Laurence to Phoenix.

About Laurence

Laurence Tidy was born in Guildford in 1993 and grew up in Woking, Surrey. Prior to becoming an artist, Laurence completed a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages (French and Spanish) at the University of Cambridge in 2015 and then worked in secondary education and for an environmental charity, amongst other areas. In 2021 he moved to Brighton to pursue the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Brighton Metropolitan College and subsequently the BA in Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton. In 2024 he received a Highly Commended Award for the Homiens Art Prize Summer round. He currently works in assemblage, joining found and pristine materials to explore sculptural shape, form, and the identity of finished pieces, punctuating the process with paint in an exploratorymanner.

This award is a collaboration between Cass Art, Phoenix Art Space, and the University of Brighton to provide support for emerging artists to continue developing their practice after graduation through a free studio for one year at Phoenix.
