Our
Studios

Phoenix Art Space is a membership organisation and charity, housing over 120 artists working in a range of disciplines in affordable studio spaces over 6 floors in the centre of Brighton. We also present year-round gallery, events, education, and community engagement programmes and have an onsite café.

Demand for the spaces is high and we generally run to capacity with a Pool List of artists waiting for spaces to become available.

Studios range in size from 10 to 36 sq. metres, with the majority being between 15 and 20 sq. metres. Spaces are charged per sq ft.

Along with providing the space you need for your practice, having a studio here is an opportunity to be involved with a vibrant community of creative people.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDIO

We will shortly be launching an Open Call for applications to join our Pool List of selected artists waiting to take up sublets and studio spaces as and when they become available. The Open Call will be promoted on our website, over social media and to our mailing list.

If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact Studios Manager Kate Neave at kateneave@phoenixartspace.org

Studio Applications

As a charity, Phoenix exists to fulfil its Charitable Objectives. These include providing studio spaces for emerging artists and those in necessitous circumstances due to their age, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or financial hardship. To be eligible for a studio space at Phoenix artists will need to fulfil one of these criteria.

If we have more applications than spaces we select artists based on the strength of artistic practice whilst also finding a balance of gender, ethnicity, age, and practice diversity within the studios.

We generally select 8 – 12 artists at each selection to join our Pool List. On average, only 4 – 5 studios become available each year, so please be aware that artists can wait for some time for a studio. Your application will first be reviewed by the Phoenix Art Space team, who will create a shortlist of 30 applications for consideration by the full selection panel.

We run the Phoenix Studio Award which offers one year of support through rent–free studio space and other opportunities, to artists from under-represented groups and who experience intersecting forms of discrimination.

We also run the Cass Art x Phoenix Art Space award in collaboration with the University of Brighton to provide support for emerging artists to continue developing their practice after graduation through a free studio for one year at Phoenix.

To keep updated about these awards please join our mailing list.

*Please note that due to the nature of our building, our studios are currently only accessible by stairs. Our ground floor which houses the gallery, education spaces and the cafe are accessible to all. For any further information on this please contact us.
