Ursula Vargas: Traveling Without Moving

Exhibition

ABOUT

A Solo exhibition by Ursula Vargas.

This collection of paintings takes us on a journey of lost, vanishing and enduring civilisations. Ursulas landscapes blend elements of the physical and imagined realms, with a pan-historical vision that merges the past, present and future. She is inspired by experiences of living in nature, the call of the jungle and its primal Amazon river, the source of everything. Her work also explores climate change, colonialism and their impact on civilisations across time.

Ursula uses the road as a motif and connective thread between her artworks, guiding the viewer through evolving visual narratives. Her story-like frameworks travel through imaginary spaces, conjuring magical realism and dreamlikescenarios. To place the viewer as the protagonist in these road trips, she uses traffic signs as metaphors for humanitysymbols that not only present warnings but also offer messages of hope and resilience.

The liminal landscapes depicted in her paintings use a Peruvian colour palette with vibrant pigments and the frequent use of complementary colours, particularly purple and yellow. Ursula’s painting process is as layered as her ideas. She starts her paintings with a neutral base of acrylic paint, allowing the brush to tell a story, then building up the work with oil paints. Ursulas primary medium is oil on canvas, but she also uses unusual found materials – such as cardboards andplastic – to explore the landscape’s relationship with human debris.

Ursula uses humour and childhood iconography to transfigure horror into visual
beauty. She also draws attention to the disruptive and ugly transformations in the environment due to humanity’s exploitation of natural resources.
