ABOUT

POP Art is a group exhibition by members of the Art Studio at Phoenix Art Space. The Art Studio offers a weekly meeting space for people on probation. It aims to improve mental health and reduce reoffending by providing participants with opportunities for social connection, creative expression, and a sense of belonging.

This POP Art exhibition celebrates individual identity and the creative process. The artists have found their own voice in the sessions through experimenting with a range of media. Their imagery features personal memories, their current surroundings and the group itself. The vibrant play of colour and the calming rhythm of printmaking are central to this collection of work as the artists celebrate the vitality of the original Pop Art movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

The Art Studio was established in 2021 as a collaboration between Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the Probation Service, and Phoenix Art Space. Sessions are co-facilitated by artists Daniel Locke and Jenny Staff, forensic psychologist Abby Fenton, and assistant psychologist Ella Hayes. The programme is funded through the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway – a network of services jointly delivered by His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Services (HMPPS) and NHS partners.
