ABOUT

Curator May Ziadé presents a screening of short films centred around Otherness in Other Worlds on behalf of Otherness Archive

Whether on a star or the moon, or within dream-like realms of inner projections, all these films are centered around Otherness in Other Worlds. At the crossroads between fantasy and reality, the events and situations depicted on-screen shine a light on the other’s relationship to the world we all tangibly inhabit, and project us into one we do not. These other worlds are neither utopias or dystopias. Rather, they function as a reminder that the line between hope and despair is fine.

May Ziadé is a French-Lebanese writer, filmmaker and the co-founder of Other People’s Films. Her work is nurtured by the physical and emotional unfoldings of the cultural and social pressures to conform.

Her latest moving image work, Mrs el Araby, explores the restricted space within which Arab women are allowed to exist in Western Media. It was commissioned by the MENA Arts Center UK and had its physical premiere at the BFI as part of the TAPE Collective’s “Where Are You Really From” programme.

Otherness Archive is a visual archive documenting queer films and its pioneers, as well as a space for contemporary filmmakers. Our choices in moving image works defies the historic censorship of homosexual, trans and racial themes, and instead highlights them as representations of otherness that deserve equal, if not greater, recognition. Otherness acts as a route into complex narratives and subjectivities that make for richer cinema.
