ABOUT

Artists Hayley Field and Jacqueline Utley are delighted to have been awarded a Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) grant from Arts Council England to further develop their collaborative project, Obscure Secure.

As part of their DYCP programme, they will undertake a one-week residency at Phoenix Art Space in Brighton. During this time, they will reflect on their work to date and explore new directions for the future.

Obscure Secure is a collaborative practice that centres the stories of marginalised women artists through curatorial, artistic, and research-based methods. Field and Utley’s approach is grounded in openness, collaboration, and a commitment to challenging artistic hierarchies.

Their work to date includes:

  • Curating exhibitions that juxtapose their own work with historic collections, including at Christchurch Mansion (Ipswich), Studio 1.1 (London), and Towner Eastbourne.

  • Programming talks and symposiums, such as Addressing the Absences at Towner Eastbourne.

  • Producing publications including Listening to Kathleen Walne.

A highlight of their research is the life and work of Kathleen Walne (1915–2011), a watercolourist whose subjects often included women students at the Brighton School of Art. One such piece will be featured during the residency:

Join the artists on Saturday 5th July from 12:00– 14:00 for an informal open afternoon in the Project Space. Visitors are welcome to drop in, view the work-in-progress, and learn more about the Obscure Secure project.
