ABOUT

Join Newlyn Art School at Phoenix Art Space, Brighton, from 5.30pm on Friday 20th February for an artist Q&A.

This Q&A forms part of the second session of the AGORA Mentoring Programme 2025/26.

Q&A Speakers and Artists

David Shrigley has reimagined what art can do and be today, inspiring emerging artists to carve their own path despite the challenges they may face. His poignant, direct drawings are treasured by minds from all walks of life and his multimedia projects, including film, writing and education, illustrate the impact of artists across society.

Veronica Slater describes herself as a “cultural sniper”, after Jo Spence. Her practice emerged from the political climate of the 1980s, addressing LGBTQ+ identity and visibility within the hostile environment of the time. Her work Soul identified as Flesh was shown in the landmark exhibition Along the Lines of Resistance, 1988, and in Women in Revolt! (Tate Britain, 2023-24) and is now in the Tate’s permanent collection. Her activity as an artist will continue to inspire a wealth of artists, educators and activists.

Lucy Day draws on her background as a curator, consultant and artist mentor to lead Phoenix Art Space, Brighton. As Executive and Artistic Director, she works across contemporary art practice, shaping the organisation’s vision, partnerships and future direction.

From 5.30-8.30pm on Friday 20th February, we’ll be holding our 2nd AGORA Mentoring Programme Q&A at Phoenix Art Space, hosted by lead tutor Jesse Leroy Smith, and accompanied by our current mentee’s artwork.

Join us in celebrating our 2025/26 cohort of mentee artists during this poignant year of professional development.
Their artworks will be displayed informally at The Phoenix Art Space during the evening event, including installation, painting, film, works in progress and associated research materials.
