Naturally dyed, artfully stitched, and culturally tied

ABOUT

Naturally dyed, artfully stitched, and culturally tied is a collaborative exhibition by London-based Korean embroidery artist Heehwa Jo and Brighton-based textile artist Sara Cook.

Since 2022, when Jo first moved to the UK, the two artists have formed a close friendship rooted in their shared passion for Korean textile traditions. This exhibition celebrates both their personal bond and their creative dialogue, weaving together embroidery and bojagi in an exploration of culture, material, and connection.

For this special project, Cook hand-dyed almost all of the fabrics and threads using natural dyes. She then reinterpreted them through bojagi, the Korean art of pieced wrapping cloths, while Jo transformed them with the refined techniques of Korean embroidery. Together, their works create a visual conversation between dyeing and stitching, tradition and innovation, individuality and friendship.
