Project Space

Sam Emery and Woody Evans: Invisibilia

Exhibition

ABOUT

‘Invisibilia’ – Latin for ‘the invisible things’, referring to things unseen and imperceptible. The paintings in this exhibition seek to explore an idea of painting as a method or mode of communication for things that are hidden and not always visible.

Grounded in material exploration, the works use a combination of figuration and abstraction. They play with ideas of scale, symmetry, and gesture, making use of different material properties to create real and illusional space. Both artists use combinations of techniques, processes and materials in an attempt to bring space to an action or
object. Household paint is utilised to create semi digital compositions which on closer inspection show air pockets, scratches, paint drips and imperfections.

Repetition and pattern also come into play in the exhibition with some works using the process of repetitive sequential brush marks to create spacial rhythms that move, flow and pulse across the canvas. The two artists met at school and then went onto Foundation at Brighton MET together. They both went their separate ways for their degree courses but recently met up again after finishing and have come together for this show, ‘Invisibilia’.
