This course covers traditional and experimental methods, linking these approaches to past and contemporary watercolour painter’s work. Emily will demonstrate different techniques throughout the course and give you time to experiment using the processes in carefully designed exercises. The course will cover colour layering and mixing, and you will learn how to layer colour wet in wet and build up layers. Emily will teach you how to apply a variety of washes; flat, graduating and variegated. You will also have the opportunity to experiment with different textures using masking fluid, wax and clingfilm. By the end of the course you will have built up the confidence to be able to enjoy, experiment and have fun with this versatile medium.

Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

Red Room, Phoenix Art Space

Some watercolour paints and paper will be provided at the start of the course but students will need to buy their own later on. You may want to invest in the following:

  • Watercolour paints e.g. Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolour student tube set or a box (approx £15)
  • Watercolour paper e.g. Cass Art 150-300g / Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolour jumbo pad 300gms (£12 – £20)
  • Brushes x 2: one soft round size 8-10, one Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolour artist brush, size 6, 8 or 10, round (£3.50 each)

You will need to bring a sketch book and pencil, masking tape and kitchen towel.

Emily Jolley is a trained painter having gained a degree in Fine Art at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle . She has been running art classes and workshops for many years in Brighton, Portsmouth and Greece. Her work was selected in The Sunday Times watercolour competition to be shown at the Mall, London. Emily’s practice is based at her studio in Phoenix Art Space.
