Ellie Sargant & Ross Borton: Size Doesn’t Matter, But That’s Probably What Ellie Told Ross After Seeing His Brushwork

Exhibition

ABOUT

Explore the vibrant and dynamic world of abstract expression through the works of Ross Borton and Ellie Sargant.

Living with undiagnosed Autism until his mid-fifties, Borton’s work reflects a lifelong battle to connect with a world that has often felt alien to him. This disaffection elicited a naturally rebellious nature, that led to an affinity with the punk culture of the late 1970’s. His work has become a voice that unburdens him from his overwhelming anxiety to be accepted and validated. It represents a freedom of expression, a way to shout loudly without speaking and an outlet to communicate his emotions.

Creating her own language through the process of subsuming and submerging forms within her work, Sargant explores erasure, obscurity and completeness. She navigates the tension between the controlled versus the uncontrolled. Intrigued by the relationship between the self and the act of painting, the material continues to excite and disappoint her in equal measures, like two forces working in tandem to uncover obscure truths about the artist herself.

Together, the works of Ross Borton and Ellie Sargant push the boundaries of colour, form, gesture and texture, engaging in an energetic dialogue between materiality and process. Their unique approaches highlight the tension between control and chaos, freedom and restraint, creating a space where vulnerability and expression coexist.
