The Curator is a new and exciting role at Phoenix for a curator at an early-mid stage in their career, with some experience of curating or supporting exhibitions, and an appetite for trying out new ideas whilst grounded in the realities of exhibition production. You will bring enthusiasm and an evidenced interest in working with contemporary artists and makers from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
This role supports the Executive Director in the research, planning, delivery and fundraising for exhibitions and public programmes. You will be in volved in the conceptualisation and delivery of the exhibitions in our Main Gallery. This includes liaising directly with artists, cultural producers, arts organisers and curators, planning transportation logistics, exhibition design and overseeing exhibition installations and de-rigs including booking and management of technicians, managing the exhibition budgets, undertaking risk assessments, display and other equipment inventories, and contributing to income generation planning and implementation.
The focus will be on contributing ideas and reproach, and coordinating, the Main Gallery exhibitions (usually 5/year and a gallery residency programme). Your expertise will also be called upon at times to ensure the exhibitions in the Project Space and Window Gallery are presented to a standard in keeping with Phoenix Art Space’s artistic ambitions and ethos, and the cultural diversity of Brighton & Hove.
With a passion for contemporary art, the Curator contributes to the creative life of the organisation, keeping abreast of developments in contemporary art, attending Phoenix’s public programmes and exhibition openings, and representing the gallery at external events. As an advocate for the venue and organisation, the curator is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with current and potential exhibitors, external curators and producers. The role helps to ensure that Phoenix Art Space is valued hub for our creative communities, through a consistently high standard of professionalism across our activities. curator role supports our mission to create the conditions where art can flourish and contributes to the day-to-day running of our lively building.
