Introduction to Screen Printing on Textiles

An action packed introduction to textile printing! This day will cover the simple but very effective printing technique of using paper stencils and silk screens. It will lead you through making your own designs to print onto tote bags, t-shirts or tea towels. We will take inspiration for designs from simple but beautiful everyday domestic objects, the natural forms of flora and fauna or your own ideas. A selection of objects will be provided for inspiration, but feel free to bring your own items/images or sketches as a starting point. You will be led through design ideas into preparing stencils for printing.

Suitable for all levels, including beginners.

*Please note this course is suitable for children over 10yrs old with an accompanying parent/carer who has bought their own adult ticket. Each child aged 10-14yrs must have an adult ticket holder to work with. Children over 14 years old may attend unaccompanied, at full price. Parent/carers must attend the start of the session to register their child and supply an emergency contact number.

Some materials will be provided. Bags and tea towels will be available to buy on the day at cost price, if you prefer to print onto t-shirts please bring your own – white, maximum 2.

Kate Strachan joined Phoenix Art Space in 2008 and was previously a member of Red Herring studios. During this time she has worked freelance in a variety of media as a designer and maker, including costume and set design, textiles, youth/community projects, residencies, teaching, and corporate events. Kate currently teaches fashion, textiles and printmaking part time and produces her own pieces using mainly vintage fabrics or linen and makes limited edition silkscreen prints on textiles and paper.
