Blue Magic: Indigo Dye and Shibori

Join textile artist Deborah Manson to learn the basics about how to make beautiful natural blues and patterns on cloth using indigo dye and experimental Shibori: Japanese folding, tying and clamping resist dye techniques.

This one-day workshop will give you an opportunity to learn how to make an indigo dye vat, and create a series of Shibori samples on cotton and your own individual Shibori textile bag.

The workshop is suitable for beginners to Shibori and those with more experience of textiles who want to broaden their skills.

* N.B. This course is suitable for children over 10yrs old (£45 ticket) with an accompanying parent/carer who has bought their own ticket. Children over 14 years old may attend unaccompanied, at full price. Parent/carers must attend the start of the session to register their child and supply an emergency contact number.

Red Room, Phoenix Art Space

All materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring along some small textile items to dye such as lightweight clothing or homewares (no large items please). Please note all items must be majority natural fibres and prewashed.

Please also bring the following:

  • A pair of rubber gloves
  • An apron
  • Fabric scissors

Deborah Manson is an artist and maker based in East Sussex. She is interested in the connections between gardening, growing, making and wellbeing. Her studio is an extension of her garden where she grows and harvests dye plants. Her practice is informed by heritage textile craft process’s such as natural dyeing, patchwork and quilting and has expanded to include activities such as foraging, gardening, growing and processing plants, recording, repairing, sharing and facilitating. Deborah studied Visual Communication at Central at Central St Martins and in 2016 she gained her MA in textiles from Chelsea college of art. She exhibits her work in museums and galleries and runs workshops and courses for people of all ages and abilities.
